Examples of Multilingual e-mail

14-16. Examples of Multilingual e-mail

First, type following characters and send with Magellan.

All these characters are of Western European (Latin1).

Message received by Outlook Express

All characters are shown correctly. There is no problem in use of single Western European language. Outlook Express can select character set automatically.

Message received by Netscape Communicator

All characters are received and shown correctly. There is no problem in use of Western European language.

Then, type as following on Magellan and send by Unicode.

Message received by Outlook Express

Some character of Latin is wrong ("i" is changed.) however most of them are shown correctly.

As the picture shows, some of Kanji and Hiragana characters are changed. It is because received Unicode message is considered as Chinese or Korean, not as Japanese. If some of characters are shown incorrectly, the e-mail client software does not support Multilingual. Outlook Express is known to have problems in Unicode conversion.

Message received by Netscape Communicator

All characters are received and shown correctly. There is no problem in Unicode conversion of Netscape communicator.

Try sending MultiScript by Magellan.

Message received by Outlook Express

If the character set is Japanese (Auto-select), most Japanese part is shown correctly, and Latin part is illegible.

If the character set is ISO-8859-1, only Latin characters are shown correctly.

Outlook Express cannot show MultiScript perfectly. (There are differences in the ability of indication of Multilingual message according to the versions.)

Notice: Repeated change of character set causes that Japanese cannot be indicated correctly on some version of Outlook Express.

Received message by Netscape Communicator

If the character set is Japanese (Auto-select), Japanese are shown correctly and Latin characters part will be illegible.

If the character set is iso-8859-1, Latin characters part will be shown correctly but the Japanese part will be illegible.

As the above description, lingual attribute will not be lost in MultiScript and some times it is more profitable in reuse of text data than sending by Unicode.

If the message is received by Magellan, both Unicode and MultiScript can be shown correctly.

14-17. Sending to other e-mail client software

Sending from Magellan in any single language.

If message will be received by e-mail client software that supports the language, you can send by Magellan without problem.

Sending by Unicode from Magellan

If the message will received by e-mail client software that supports Unicode, it will be shown correctly. Concretely, Outlook Express 5.0 or later, Netscape Communicator 4.0 or later, Power Mail 2.0 or later supports Unicode.

Sending by MultiScript by Magellan.

As most of e-mail software is based on premise that message is written in any single language, multilingual e-mail by MultiScript often cannot be shown correctly.

14-18. Correspondence with Windows

On Windows platform, major multilingual e-mail client software is Outlook Express and Netscape Communicator.
Older version of Outlook Express than 4.XX has problems in the handling of languages. In this section, following description is about Outlook Express and Netscape Communicator.
For example, following introduction is correspondence in Simplified Chinese.
If Global IME is installed on your Windows system, Chinese FEP is available only when the Outlook Express is working. You can send chinese message from Outlook Express on Windows platform to Magellan if you type chinese characters every time you write message. ( You can download Global IME from Microsoft web site.)

Sending from Windows to Magellan

Select character set from the Format menu.
If the message is Simplified Chinese, select GB2312 or Unicode (utf-8). GB2312 keeps lingual attribute on message sent to Magellan.

Sending from Magellan to Windows

Any setting is not necessary however, message title have to be English. If title is not us-ascii, received title by Outlook Express will be garbage text.

Read multilingual message received on Windows

If the message is garbage characters, select GB2312 or Unicode (utf-8) from character set menu.

Next introduction is about multilingual correspondence.
For example, send Japanese and Chinese e-mail message.

Sending multilingual message from Windows to Magellan

Select Unicode (utf-8) from the character set menu before sending multilingual message.

Sending multilingual message from Magellan to Windows

Message must be sent by Unicode.

Reading multilingual message received on Windows

If the message includes garbage text, select Unicode (utf8) from the Character Set in the format menu.

Basically, as multilingual message always uses Unicode (utf-8) on Windows platform, even indication is correct however text is impossible to reuse. (Read the Unicode chapter.) If MultiScript is used, appropriate switch of Character Set have to be done for correct indication of text.

14-19. Multilingual Tips

Sending single language from Magellan to other e-mail client.

To Outlook Express or Netscape Communicator, there is no problem and no special attentions must be payed in use of language. To other e-mail client software that user can set appropriate encoding and decoding, you can send correctly from Magellan. Normally, it is probable that the localized system is installed on the local user's computer. You only have to use the receiver's local language.

Sending Multilingual message from Magellan to other e-mail client (Unicode)

E-mail client which supports Unicode, such as Outlook Express and Netscape Communicator can receive message encoded by Unicode.

Sending MultiScript message from Magellan

As most of e-mail client software is made on the premise that message is written in any single language, multilingual message by MultiScript is impossible to be received correctly by other e-mail client.

Sending monolingual message from Magellan to other e-mail client.

Outlook Express and Netscape Communicator can receive any monolingual message correctly. Other e-mail client which is able to set encoding and decoding corresponding language also receive any monolingual message correctly. Because receiver's lingual environment is probably same as of one's place of residence, you can send or receive message without other special consideration. by Magellan.

Sending multilingual message by Magellan (Unicode)

E-mail client supports Unicode, such as Outlook Express and Netscape Communicator, can receive message sent by Unicode correctly.

Why other e-mail client is "Outlook Express" or "Netscape Communicator"?

Because Outlook Express and Netscape Communicator can switch encoding / decoding automatically. It is true that other e-mail clients can switch encoding and decoding but positive switching is impossible in most case.

Isn't Magellan compatible with other e-mail client?

Before talking about compatibility, it is fact that any other e-mail clients were impossible to send multilingual message.
Magellan is first e-mail client that enabled multilingual e-mail correspondence in the world.

What are the differences between multilingual e-mail client and multilingual word processor?

They are based on quite different technology.
Word processor works on some technologies of WorldScript, TextEdit and Font manager or their combination. These are depends on the computer or operating system, only effective on the Macintosh. However, e-mail is necessary to be highly compatible with other operating system or ISO standardization of each languages. In other words, sufficient condition of word processor is only on its operating system, but e-mail have to be acceptable even on other computers.

	Message received by Outlook Express
	All characters are shown correctly. There is no problem in use of single Western European language. Outlook Express can select character set automatically.
	Message received by Netscape Communicator
	All characters are received and shown correctly. There is no problem in use of Western European language.
